Diving on the Monroe off the the Pelican out of VaBch yesterday. Digging around inside I came across a crate full of dozens of 100 yr. old black stockings. I grabbed a handful, anyone need a pair to go with their knickers? Perfect shape, how they survived their stay in the water is beyond me. Never saw so many freaking flounders in my life. I had to shoo them out of the way so's I could dig. Pelican is new boat in the area, used to be the Thunder Horse out of MD. Fast, typical Louisiana crew boat, pretty bare bones, not even a fresh water hose. When the divemaster asked who I was buddied with, I said no-one, I was diving solo. So he gave me a lecture about the evils of solo diving, said choose someone to dive with, and then said he didn't give a shit what I did once I was in the water (wink wink, nod nod). Aaaahhh, diving in Virginia Beach. Being quick on the uptake this particular morning, I pointed to the guy puking off the stern and hustled over the side. Interesting experience on trip: Old college roomate showed up on trip, hadn't seen in years, my first thought was "oh, God, this guy is diving?". He had all the gear, AGA mask, superwings, force fins, Bridge II, etc. At any rate he checked his gas, I saw 32%. On his second dive he got on the boat all in a tizzy. "Man, there I was" he said, "all of a sudden my Bridge started beeping, it said I was ox-toxing". "How could that be" sez I, "you've got 32 in your tanks, I saw it, and it's 90' max here". "I don't know" sez he, "the computer sez I got 50% in the tanks, so I did an emergency ascent". "You did what?!, what the hell did you do that for?" sez I. "Well, I pretty much do what the computer sez". (A Bridge II resetting itself to 50%, who could have thought it could happen?) Gosh, could he have been narced at a measly 90'? Ahh, the state of diving today. So I sat back and listened to the time he got a nose bleed and threw up into his AGA face mask. He said that when his dive buddy looked at him, he thought his brain had exploded. I have to admit, that was pretty funny. On this trip it appears that OMS is doing a booming business in SuperWings, those rubber-banded abominations were all over the place. I did see bits and pieces of sense, a isolation manifold here, hoses lead down there. No one had a snorkel on their mask, looks like that dinosaur is finally dieing out. No independent doubles. So, slowly, I see that BS configs are changing. Keep up the drum-beat Hogarth guys.
