While I see your point, I disagree with both the conclusion and the 
practice.

I wouldn't leave my tanks to be filled, I would (and do) stand there and 
watch. That, coupled with an analysis, is the only way I feel confident 
about what's in the tank.

I can see how someone less vigilant would end up dead.

A really good reason, in my humble opinion, not to be less vigilant.
