There's a commercial product called Goo-Gone that works too, but not all the time. I use it for cleaning up old duct tape residue off rental grip equipment. If you need something stronger and are marking non-painted bottles, try acetone. It's nastier stuff, but it does work, even on permanent marker. If you are using grease pencil, aerosol hairspray will take it right off on any non-porus surface. With the exception of acetone, these are cheap household fixes. You can get acetone at an auto parts or paint supply store.
