Paul

FWIW, I have recently purchased 4 of the Apeks US4 first stages with TX40
second. I believe (but cannot confirm) that the performance of all of
the first stages are the same. The US4 has 4 3/8" low pressure ports and
a single high pressure port. No turrets, not environmentally sealed.
The TX40 ("rated" to 63 m) has a venturi adjustment but no other -
simple to maintain and *should* be more reliable (less o-rings) than the
adjustable TX50 ("rated" to 70 m).

I have only just started using these regs so can't speak from experience
about the reliability. However, they performed fine up to 78 m on Trimix
and 55 m on air via a long hose. The only issue where a turret would
help (on a Hogarthian rig) is to marginally improve the routing of the HP
hose over the wing. On the (un-turretted) US4 regulator, the gap between
the HP hose and the cylinder is only just large enough to fit the wing
underneath without positioning the first stage off the horizontal plane.

I paid about UKP 125 for each regulator which is outstandingly good value
for a world-class regulator. I selected these options for reliability
and performance rather than any consideration of cost.

One point about the issue of environmental sealing vs non-environmentally
sealed. I previously used Oceanic regulators - the first stages of which
are excellent and unsealed. I am not an expert on these matters, but I
have never had a free flow in water but have so on the surface. The
symptoms indicated that it was the second stage that was the cause not
the first stage. This was one reason why I decided not to go for
environmental seals. My choice. BTW, winter water temperatures were
around 3-4 deg C, not sure what the air temperature was but is was cold!

A quick question regarding left post 1st stages for a Hogarthian set up.
Apeks (Zeagle) make two similar 1st stages, the DST and the DS4. Is the
performance the same for both of these 1st stages?
I know that the DST (turret) has the 1/2" MP port - I already have a plug
for
this ;-). Is there any reason to go for one or the other?

Regards
Paul.
