THe reason for the TLS top is that TLS is less binding, lighter, and more flexible - a must in real diving. The reason for the crushed foam bottom is that the New England divers crawl around an the wrecks, and the cf does not puncture as easily as the tls material. As far as cutting or ripping, it makes little difference. The correct choice, the TLS ( with kneepads for the crawlers) allows big insulation without losing flexibility, and the buoyancy does not change with depth, as it would in a neopreme suit, nor does it bind or constrict like the crushed foam. The difference in price between doing it right and having a total charlie foxtrot is a couple hundred bucks.
