John, I can only speak for Southern California, but there are a number of submarine canyons out here that are easily reachable via beach dive. They include: Site City County Point Dume Malibu Los Angeles County Redondo Redondo Beach Los Angeles County La Jolla La Jolla San Diego County They are deeper than you would want to go, even on mix.
