Rick >What's a good source of SS backplates? I called OMS and their > retail for the plate alone is over $150. Good question. You can have them made up much cheaper than OMS will sell them for. The hard part may be finding someone that has the capability to bend the SS. I have mine made up. I use a 12 pound SS (1/4 in thick) when doing the cold stuff up here. The other problem is finding the SS at a scrap yard. If I can find the lighter SS, I can have the smaller stuff made up as well. If you get it, then you can use another plate (DR AL or AUL AL) as a template. The slots can be punched on the smaller stuff, or may need to be cut with a plasmid cutter on the bigger stuff. Not trying to push anything, I can have a 12 pound plate made for you for $100. It may take awhile to get the steel and the guy bending them owns a steel fab shop and gets backed up occasionally. The lighter stuff, I am not sure where the best source is. OMS might be one of the few places to get the lightger SS plates commercially. BTW, they are bent like the DR AL plates (shallow-V), although this can be changed as well. Take care, Mike -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
