Each year Boston Sea Rovers brings you exciting and innovative
personalities from the underwater realm to share a part of their world
with you. At the 43rd Annual Boston Sea Rovers Clinic, several world-renown
videographers, cinematographers, and photographers will present the results
of their latest forays beneath our planet's waters:
Stan Waterman, the Master of Ceremonies, has been at the forefront of
SCUBA diving since its inception as a recreational sport both in this
country and throughout the world. His attraction to the underwater world
as a schoolboy in 1936 when he first dove with a Japanese Ama diver's mask
in Florida. Between 1954 and 1958, he operated a dive business in the Bahamas
with a boat he had built specially for diving. His first 16mm film on
diving was produced during those years. During the next fifteen years Mr.
Waterman continued to record his world wide journeys and exploits on film. In
1968, he collaborated with Peter Gimbel on the classic shark film, Blue Water,
White Death.
He may be best known for his work in commercial film. He was co-director of
underwater photography and second unit in the production of the Deep,
based on Peter Benchley's bestselling novel. In other collaborations with
his close friend and neighbor, Mr. Benchley, he was responsible for ten
years worth of productions for ABC's "American Sportsman Show". More
recent productions include documentaries for ABC's "Spirit of Adventure"
series and the "Expedition Earth" series on ESPN.
Mr. Waterman has received numerous honors and awards for his work in
television and in behalf of the sea including five Emmys, two Gold Medals
from the U.K. Underwater Film Festival, four Golden Eagles, two Boston Sea
Rovers' Diver of the Year, and many more.
In addition to acting as Master of Ceremonies, Stan will present his
latest work, the world premiere of Fiji with the Nai'a.
Brian Skerry is an underwater photojournalist based in Massachusetts.
Specializing in elusive and challenging subject matter. Skerry has worked
in diverse environments including open ocean, beneath the ice, and inside
caves. With a focus on large marine animals, he has traveled the world in
pursuit of natural history subjects. He has dived with pods of Orcas in
the frigid waters of the Norwegian Arctic, witnessed the power of Great
White Sharks in South Australia, and been chased through the water by Sperm
Whales in the Azores. His images of a ten foot Oarfish, the legendary sea
serpent, are the only known photos in the world of this rarely seen animal.
His work has been featured in numerous magazines including People, Sports
Illustrated, US News and World Report, American Heritage, and National
Geographic, as well as in a host of books and calendars on shipwrecks and
the marine environment. Brian's numerous articles and photos have appeared
in every major diving publication in the U.S. and have been published
internationally. He assisted on several National Geographic and Discovery
Channel film projects with subjects ranging from German U-boats and lost
treasure ships to sharks of the world.
Brian will share his new work, Mythical Atlantic, with the audience.
Adam Ravetch is an underwater cinematographer with credits on well over
100 films since 1986, and his work has been seen worldwide. As a graduate
of San Diego State University with a degree in Zoology, he went on to study
shark research at the Graduate School of Marine Biology at California State
University, Long Beach and received the Our World Underwater Scholarship. At
Brooks Institute of Photographic Arts & Sciences, he attended classes in motion
picture, video and photography. His work has been featured by major
networks including NBC, CBC, CBS, and TBS, Japan. His 1990 film, "Ice
Puppy" won numerous awards including The Rolex Grand Prize for Subaquatic
Wildlife Protection and a CINE Golden Eagle.
Adam will show Arctic Images, his latest effort gleaned from numerous
journeys to the frozen North.
Michael deGruy is an award-winning filmmaker specializing in underwater
and on-water photography. deGruy's 17 year career has allowed him to film in
the world's most remote and spectacular locations for his own productions as
well as those for the BBC and National Geographic Society. A
cinematographer, producer, director, writer and television host, Mike's
work has also been featured by WNET's PBS series, "Nature," and the
Discovery Channel. A great deal of his film footage appeared in the highly
acclaimed and awarded series on animal behavior entitled The Trials of
Life, presented by David Attenborough and produced by the BBC and Turner
Broadcasting Systems. Just a few of the exciting subjects Mike has given
his unique perspective on include cephalopods, killer whales, sea otters,
mantis shrimp and sharks.
Mike has promised to entertain everyone with excerpts from his works. The
title of his presentation is Incredible Suckers.
