Subject: Historic (?) books

I just got hold of a book called "Caves and Cave Diving" originally in 
French as " Toute la Speleogie" by Guy de Lavaur (translated by Edmund 
Mason). The book has no publishing date in it, but the owner of the 
bookshop thinks it would be late 50s early 60s judging by the paper and 
binding. I haven't started reading so I can't comment on the contents.

Can anyone shed any light on who Guy de Lavaur is / was and what date the 
book was published ?
