Try wearing a backup mask around your neck. Most FFM divers I know wear
their's backwards so that the strap is at the front of their necks. 
You'll find that, with a little practice, you'll be able to make a
regulator switch and slide the mask up relatively easily.

BTW, I'm curious about what kind of research you guys are doing down
there in the waters of the Antarctic.
