Mark, >Maybe I should state then that I feel a line alone is not >good enough. Perhaps awareness or some other techniques >(progressive penetration, etc..) should be incorporated. This is not the point. Even the most fervent line-user understands that a line alone is not enough in a complex system. Nobody is arguing against awareness (mental preparation, familiarity, etc) as an essential safety technique in a hazardous environment. The question is whether *you* understand and accept that a line AND awareness are safer than awareness alone. >A line, by itself, to me does not seem sufficient safety and >can lead, perhaps, to complete reliance, Only if you let it. If you have the mental discipline to find your way in and out of a complex wreck, you have the mental discipline to do that while running a line. Picking up a reel does not cause instant brain fade. There is a reason people use lines. They are simple, they are easy, and they are the only technique that will reliably save your butt in a serious no-viz situation (except for dumb luck). I am still waiting to hear the first good reason NOT to use a line for penetration diving. That is, something besides, "Well, I might get lazy..." -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'. Send list subscription requests to `techdiver-request@aquanaut.com'.
