To the individual who suggested paying a visit to Radio Shack to purchase their cheapest wire in order to snag the spool to fabricate a safety spool... My thanks! It seems that RS is no longer using those stamped and painted tin spools to distribute their wire but instead some plain black, one piece sturdy plastic spools. They are roughly about 2.5 " in diameter (the flange) and the spindle is about 1.75" in length (don't have the exact measures here). Not quite ideal (I'd have liked the flange a little wider and the spindle a little shorter so the whole spool would be flatter) but close enough until something better comes along. A quick drill hole to accommodate a double ended clip and voila'. I figured for $3.95 I could be a sport! It can comfortably hold about 150' of line which is more than enough (perhaps too much?) for a safety spool. George had suggested the ideal is an aluminum microfilm takeup reel, but with the newer technologies, those are pretty scarce around here. Someone did mention that they were fabricating spools with more optimum dimensions for eventual sale. But in the interim, for less then $5 I've got a piece of safety gear without the expense, complexity and potential jamming of a reel. Robb W ==================================== CDR Robert B.
