If someone is wrong-headed or doesn't even have a clue about what a mailing list is for, reply with gentle guidance, not abuse. There is a $1000 charge for commercial advertising on the lists. This policy is to prevent spam on the mailing lists, and will not be used to prosecute anyone but an intentional spammer. You agree to pay this fee, if you ever post a commercial message, and to indemnify the list operator against expenses involved in collecting the fee such as legal and collection agency fees.
