The question was whether having it partially - or close to - shut would allow sufficient gas to pass while diving. michael << Michael, the reason for the isolation valve is that you can close it in case one of the valve stems is bent and the reg cannot be shut down with the cylinder valve. This can happen if you touch something. If concentrated during the dive, this may only be happen in zero vis. Whenever touching something, check the valves every time, and you will be aware of a bent stem problem. There is no need to play around with a little bit open, half open or whatever partially open isolation valve. The same is true for the cylinder valves. Playing around with partially open isolation valves will sooner or later produce problems with tank filling.
