The reason for the snorkle in surf is mostly for the case where we take
gear through the surf in stages. The surf is sometimes too formidible to
go through with tank on back, cameras, nets, etc. etc. Remeber, I'm not
talking about beach surf - I'm talking about surf breaking over a shallow
spur & groove reef. The snokel makes it much easier to get the gear
through in several stages, so you don't need the tanks on you back for
each pass. The same is true coming home.

The reasons for the snorkle on long surface swims while navigation on the
reef and for chasing down a drifting boat are obvious to anyone with any
real experience in open-water diving.

For those of you on the list who continue to maintain that there is
"never" a reason to carry a snorkle on a "serious" dive, I should caution
you that you are only revealing how limited your open-water diving
experience really is.

Aloha,
Rich
