Marty, I had severe asthma for many years. The answer for me was cardio exercise, especially low-impact stuff, and swimming. Make sure you can swim properly, I got lessons at my local pool which ensure I get a proper lung workout. I used to run quite a lot, but my knees gave out the first time I tried to run 20 miles, so I only do very little on the running machine these days.
