It comes back to technique and NOT equipment or configuration. I would at worst have half a tank available to me, that's how I manage my air. I never breathe independants down below 50% unless I am already on my deco station. That leaves plenty of air to save my ass and a bit for emergencies as well. Generally I would start my dive on one bottle, when I reach 2/3 of that first tank I switch to the second. I breathe that tank no further than 50% before I am on my way back to the surface. That means at the anchor line and ascending. I have learned my lesson from poor technique on independants and have found that this system works well for the diving I do. I enjoy diving with a manifold since I don't have to watch my gas so closely. But that is also a benefit of independants, I feel, that you are constantly aware of your gas supply.
