Hate to rock the boat folks, but life's to short to just go along for the ride. Sorry if this post seems slightly preachy, righteous, or green, which is not my intention. I'm just making a point (and I also hate extreme P.C.). Feel free to flame it down a bit. The vote so far is about 5 to 1 for diving related news posts, which indicates I should continue. The main issue seems to be what is the nature of this list. What does "Tech" mean, and what is a Techdiver? It is IMHO, it is someone who is a seriously dedicated professional, academic, or amateur, who has achieved (or desires) an advanced state of knowledge and skill concerning a specialized topic or field of diving, and who's work or pastime involves diving and marine sciences. If I have somehow left you out with this description, I'm sure you'll let me know. Some people seemed to indicate this is a Technology - only (advanced equipment/techniques) diver list, and that non "Tech" -ology's, such as Eco, Bio, Zoo, Arche, ect, -ologies, are inappropriate. I realize that many don't want 'extraneous' topics to waist our precious bandwidth and time, but frankly I cannot understand this attitude. How can ANY diver not be concerned with the present state and future of the waters we hold dear? Some naysayers understandably said I should post to other newsgroups. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it is my impression that many of the people on this list are here because they want to hear HIGH QUALITY discussions, with a low noise and low b*llsh*t to truth ratio (discussing science and all advanced topics of concern to divers). Please Note: I'm not posting discussions about how to clear your mask, or which new color coordinated snorkels are the coolest. And I don't belong to or read these other diving lists because I don't have the time or desire to filter out the huge amount of this type of noise. I think it would be safe to say the model 'archetypal' Techdiver is the man who took a small military/industrial concern and made it a world wide popular phenomenon, - Jacques-Yves Cousteau. His lifetime mission has necessarily been forced to change from pioneering the exploration and study of the world's oceans - to saving them. I think its important that we keep in mind his cause, and that although this is an issue we needn't be dedicated to, we still shouldn't ignore it completely. But these are only my opinions, and perhaps I'm in the minority here. Mark "I wish that every person on Earth were a diver, because then we would look at the ocean with the same eyes, and we would cherish, nurture, and tend that blue eighty percent of our planet's surface, and she would repay our care with the most incredibly bountiful harvest imaginable. ....(del.txt.)..... and ..... If we are wise and brave.... - .... We can live the beginning of Earth's golden age - The age of the ocean." _ Don C. Reed _ (ex) chief animal caretaker @ Marine World USA - who has logged over 9,000 hours underwater. From "Notes from an Underwater Zoo". PS, I also have some interesting proprietary scuba technology info to post, such as patent abstracts, claims for 'Dual Use Fins' (amphibious) and a cryogenic breathing/propulsion scuba system for divers (among others). Let me know if I should post this type of info.
