I was wondering if these fish might have been wolf eels, which are seen 
quite regularily up here on the East Coast.  These look like morey eels, 
however thely are red in the spring (mating season) to blue-ish brown 
now.  These ugly creatures eat urchins and anything that seems to move, 
spitting out the spines
