It's true what Rod said, and a cool computer it is. >>> Kevin was given the opportunity to buy the computer a year ago and he turned it down.<<< Yup. That's true. Marco wanted $X,xxx.xx dollars for it. "No way" said I. Finally, I worked a deal with him to buy two of 'em for about the price Rod paid for his one. But, like most things in life - you snooze, you lose. I waited too long to get him started building 'em. BUT, it worked out in the end, especially when I pay only $1,500 for the BioMarine unit. My comment about Marco was not intended to put him down, it was a commentary on the state of manufacturing today. Lawyers have every last one of them cowering in their offices, worrying who will sue them next. I've been sued by the best, having owned a multi-million dollar company, and as such, don't fear the bastards as much as everyone else (sorry Hal, you're a NICE bastard... ; -) ) >>> so now Kevin must go to BioMarine and buy the computer. For the record, I can order as many computers exactly like mine from Desert Star and they would build them for me. Why not? It was my idea. This is how it works in America. A manufacturer can decide who it is willing to sell product to and who it is not- for whatever reason. Most manufacturers in the dive industry require that you buy their products from a reseller. Rod<<< Rod SHOULD be able to order all the computers he wants from Marco, he set the specifications for it. And we'll all benefit in the future from Rod's work. He also paid so much money, Marco is still filling his boat with gas from the proceeds... But like all pioneers, Rod doesn't mind being a trendsetter for the rest of us. I, for one, am happy that I'll be able to get one of these units from BioMarine for the reasonable price offered. But a spade is still a spade. Lawyers are making this entire world a living hell for anyone who manufactures anything. Marco's desire (and I stress "desire" because I could tell that if I wanted to, I could cajole him into making one for me) NOT to make anymore of these had to do with his fear of liability, NOT his desire to sell through BioMarine. When I asked him about a "general release form" he said that even that didn't protect him enough. "What if someone you are related to decides to sue me?" he asked, "They didn't sign the release form..." he added. This is NO reflection on Marco, who I'm sure makes an outstanding product. Rod says that this computer is awesome, and I believe him. Marco is a small businessman making a unique product for a niche market. As such, he HAS to worry about liability. Having been in the position of running a company, and having faced an onslaught of lawyers for various reasons, I applaud anyone who is out there today trying to make an honest buck by producing a good product. I just hope that someday we get some common sense legislation that will put RESPONSIBILITY back in the hands of the end-user. And THAT, is my whole point. Kevin.
