Here's the story. I commissioned Marco Flagg of Desert Star Systems to build a computer for my rebreather that monitors pO2 of the sensors among many other features I wanted in the unit for my diving, including mixed gas decompression, gas switches, simulation, etc. I described in detail what I wanted and Marco built it around a system he already had in production. I saw his original unit at DEMA two years ago and we talked and I realized that he could adapt it handily to a rebreather. So I commissioned him to do it. Kevin was given the opportunity to buy the computer a year ago and he turned it down. Today, with a successful mixed gas computer for open circuit, rebreathers and the like, Marco is taking the highly USUAL step that most manufacturers take- he is refusing to sell directly to the consummer. You must buy the unit from a reseller. Dick King of BioMarine talked to Marco about downsizing my computer for the new CCR500 rebreather (it and mine will work with all other rebreathers and as a standalone computer for open circuit)- and dumbproofing it because of all the dumb shit divers who will buy it not having a clue what they are doing. Marco designed it and BioMarine just ordered production of a couple of dozen of the computers which will take about two months to build and send to BioMarine. so now Kevin must go to BioMarine and buy the computer. For the record, I can order as many computers exactly like mine from Desert Star and they would build them for me. Why not? It was my idea. This is how it works in America. A manufacturer can decide who it is willing to sell product to and who it is not- for whatever reason. Most manufacturers in the dive industry require that you buy their products from a reseller.
