Subject: Re: wreck anchoring
Scott,
probably the safest method & simplest(although requiring quiet a bit of
skill) would be the one refed to you by Capt. Janet.
Another approach is one used extensively in the Northeast:
The wreck is located by loran & sonar & you drop a grapnel type anchor with
about 25-35 ft of chain(the size of the chain will be determined by the size
of your boat).
You have a person standing by geared up & when the boat is over the wreck he
jumps in & follows the line down & ties in.
The Captain of the boat (after the diver is down & clear of the boat
)maintains the position of the boat until the diver signals that he has
completed the tie in by sending up styrofoam cups.
There are definately hazards that this system presents & it takes
coordination & practice for this system to be handled safely. A lapse of
concentration on anyones part can be extremely dangerous.

On the other hand "dropping" down 80msw into a running current, after sailing
(i'm assuming) for a fair amount of time to reach the site, & then MISSING IT
is an unacceptable option to me.
just my 3pennies worth.

dive on & on hank

I'm interested in any ideas as to the best way to anchor or dive this wreck.
It is in 80msw, small, surrounded by reef and prone to huge currents and big
seas. The last 2 times we have tried the anchor was on reef and the next
time we tried with a shot line it a) ploughed a furrow and was miles away
from the wreck by the time we got down due to huge current and b) the bouy
was dragged underwater(35m) due to the drag caused by 3 divers in full kit.
The only solution appears to be to anchor and if it has not stuck in 30secs
to retreive it and try again as it will most likely be on reef. The anchor
often pulls out however due to the drag of the divers descending the line
 when there is current.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
