the method i have found that works well for me in the great lakes in wrecks greater than 200 feet deep is as follows. i locate the wreck with sonar and drop a jug OFF one end of the wreck. i go down the length of the wreck to locate the other end and drop another jug now i have BOTH ends marked away from the actual wreck i now can go right down the middle of the wreck if i want, if i know which way it lays i can get to within 30% of the bow or stern or midship the ground tackle is 1/2 nylon med lay 3strand 10 feet of proof tested 3/8 chain with a 5 tine ss grapling hook. the chain and ss hook will be enough weight as soon as the hook sets a diver goes straight down the line to lock us in. he carries with him a piece of line about 20 feet coiled up with a beaner ant each end once he get to the wreck he CLIPS one end to the chain and he LOOPS the line thriugh the wreck and back to the BEANER. the boat is now made fast with the hook and also the "jumper" IF the hook pulls loose,,,so what the jumper will hold. the strength of the jumper is determined by the size of boat/wind /waves,current. i usually use 1/8" parachute chord. remember it is DOUBLED so the force to tear it is also doubled. when the last man is at the hook...he pulls it off the wreck..... BINGO we are now held to the wreck with the jumper only....no sweat just decompress and get in the boat. when everyone is in the boat all gear stowed, ladder up ...o2 wrapped up etc. ...time to go////throw a few revs into the engine and it will strain a bit throw a few more in and BINGO!!!! the jumper tears..."hook,,, line,,, and jumper come right up for another day...all i do is tie a knot in the tear and use the jumper over again.. i suggest replacing jumper after 10 tears.... i have not lost any ground tackle in at least 15 years using this method...i have used this method when maybe a few times we should have not been diving....let alone on the water because of waves my $01 worth GENTLEMEN:::: i am open to comments and crititizim(sic) (((flames not accepted unless accompanied by a valid credit card number and exp. date)))) sign on my boat:::THE CLOSEST LAND IS STRAIGHT DOWN
