I forgot to mention. Like other high-melting solids, such as tungsten and carbon, Calcium Oxide (Lime) becomes incandescent when heated near its melting point of 2,500 degrees C. Before the advent of electricity (circa 1880), Lime was used as an illuminant in stage lighting. The technique, invented in 1816 involved impinging a hot oxyhydrogen flame on a cylinder containing a solid block of Lime. When heated sufficiently, the lime would emit a brilliant white light that was concentrated to a beam by a lens, and was used to spotlight actors on stage.
