Interesting.  I've never tried to push the canister any deeper than about 
30 feet.  Maybe I should sometime?

I mean it is unreliable because it indicates the level of CO2 on the 
surface of the particles, which can be high immediately after a dive, but 
might diminish after several hours.  If you take some purple absorbent, 
then let it sit overnight, it will be white again in the morning; but the 
absorbent will still be mostly spent.  Also, the folks at OC Lugo told me 
the indicater was almost useless, but this was a couple of years ago, so 
that may have changed.

Both from seeing the stuff change back to white *repeatedly*, and from 
what I have been told by people who know much more about the chemistry 
than I do.
