[Snipping from Reima's description of Gilliams' "Deep Diving" where Gilliams suggests the use of dive computers in air dives, and that Reima uses the SUSL 92 tables for their dives to 50 m, being more conservative than the USN tables (and examples). Snip!] >Computers typically go between these two. In repetitive dives with >typical 4-6 hr surface time tables give significantly longer >deco-times, computers give close to no penalty. A question to those familiar with the algorhythms, would this lack of a penalty relative to the dive tables imply some discrepancy with the algorhythm (ie. a situation which the algorhythm cannot satisfactorily deal with)? >Using this 2-dives-a-day style with "liberal" (from my SUSL point of >view) BSAC 88 and dive computers have led to _very_ many >"bend-hits" in Northern Scotland. It seems that these hits are >related to repetive diving since they mostly appear after >4-5 days of diving. Dives typically are not very long, but it >seems that decos are insufficient. According to DAN's '1991 Report on Diving Accidents & Fatalities,' "DCS was associated with dives (80 feet [24 m] or greater), repetitive diving within the tables and with multi-level profiles. The set of characteristics relating to DCS cases may reflect the number of divers who use dive computers rather than relying on the standard non-decompression tables." [p. 30] Page 32 shows a table which describes DCI (embolism and DCS) incidence as a result of table or computer use. Of the all incidences involving DCI, a greater percent of table divers experienced embolism than the computer divers - perhaps because the computer divers are, in general, a more experienced group as discussion in this list has shown. On the other hand, computer users showed a greater incidence of DCS hits than the table users, perhaps due to the limits of existing dive computers for the dives in which they are used (perhaps). What do people here think about the limitations of computers, or the tables for that matter? >We always dive following our tables. Does anybody use only >computer info for this kind of diving? Any US NAVY users out there? >Any opinions/comments? Any experiences? Looking forward to hearing anything on this. >Reima Raty >------------------------------------------------------------------- >I do not encourage anybody to cross recommended 130 ft maximum >depth with sport diver training. Dive conservatively and enjoy >every dive! >------------------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Pete St. Onge
