You need to be able to remove any piece of gear you're wearing in 
case of entanglement. This is taught in every open water 1 class I've 
ever seen. You can't remove crap that's on a metal-metal connection 
especially when it's held with things like hose clamps, to put it 
simply, you can't even cut it off with your knife.
