Mr. Dude <heyydude@pi*.co*> came up from His Latest Dive and wrote: > ... >There are people on this list that sincerely believe that butt-mounting >lights is stupid. There are also those who believe that in the free countries where most of us dive, we should be free to dive the way we want. "I may not agree with your equipment configuration, but I will defend to the death your right to go into the water looking like that" and all that. (Note: a province near here is reputedly enacting legislation to levy fines on all those who solo dive and otherwise fly in the face of the public good. This sort of thing scares me.) It's George's right to advance his style of diving too, and there are always going to be those who resent being preached to, and resent him all the more when he's right. Me, I'm a Personal Preferencer who prefers to dive Hogarthian because it makes sense to me. (Note, though, that I'm a wreck diver, with no scooter, and IMHO being Hogarthian does NOT mean having to look like an exact clone of George going into Wakulla.) > ... We're a long way past the basic course student who gets drilled with the basics without any detailed explanation of why. At our level, we need a detailed understanding of why and how. The quick rules are still useful for survival, but they need to be internalized with their reasons. Even the most respected divers here can't just make a pronouncement without being asked "But why, Master?". Good posting, Dude. -- Anthony DeBoer http://www.onramp.ca/~adb/ adb@he*.re*.or* (here) adb@ge*.co* (work) #include "std.disclaimer"
