The long hose/short hose discussion is getting long and so far the 
facts show more in favor of the long than the short.  Nobody here has 
yet shown even half the factual reasons for using the short hose as  the long
 hose people have for using the long hose.
Here's one point to ponder if you're still not convinced that the 
long hose is better:
Five times in my 12 years of diving I've had a regulator taken from my 
mouth by  a panicking diver. All five times it was from somebody I was
 not diving with.  The first two times I was left struggling for my stuffed
hose.  
The last three I comfortably took the short one hanging from my 
neck.  The last three people also now breathe the long hose vice 
stuffing it.
WHY MAKE TWO VICTIMS WHEN YOU CAN MAKE NONE?

Breathe the long hose.
