Undoubtably that message supposedly from Tom Mount was a fake.

Although it is true he does teach his students how to butt mount a light, and
when I did run into him two weeks ago with a class, they (Tom & his students)
looked like models from a certain companies catalog, I'm sure it's not because
he doesn't care about his students. I'm sure he has a perfectly logical reason
to recommend equipment that costs 2-3 times as much as other companies (or
even in some cases other equipment which works as well if not better by the
same company which costs less, example wings/backplate over an openwater BC
that is also a technical BC) that works no better then other equipment.

As for butt mounting lights, the only thing I can figure is Tom feels his
students should also be taught how to "do it wrong" (as George would say) as
well as do it right. Give them the freedom to try all systems out and use
"personal preference" to decide which works best for them. Given the option
that he could either teach them to only do it all wrong, teach them to do it
all right, or teach them both, obviously teaching them only the right way is
preferrable. However, teaching them both ways is indeed better then teaching
them only the wrong way.

Indeed, one of his students was wearing the new black light on the right
hand side of the waist, and was breathing off his long hose. The other on the
other hand had the light on his butt, breathed the short hose, etc. etc. etc...

It is definatly interesting to me that instructors who have been teaching for
quite awhile are switching to the hogarthian concepts, while others just don't
seem to have figured it all out yet. Case in point, Lloyd Bailey is now
teaching all of his students how to breathe the long hose, and he told me that
he's happy doing it too.

I've been rambling too long. Time for me to go fill my tanks for this weekend.

Ken
