Indeed the scud rebreather has been around for a while. The three separate gases and mixing system, combined with a lack of O2 sensors, have made certain people very upset and concerned about their fellow divers' safety. Fortunately Dive-Rite, in special collaberation with Jim King and the US Dept. of Defense, have come up with a solution that they hope will rid the market of the scud rebreather. The American-made Patriot (TM) rebreather system, due to be released to the European recreational market as soon as they find a sponsor, is designed specifically to eliminate any prospective user of the scud system (thus preventing them from loaning the unit, or recommending it to their friends). The really hose-endowed technical looking Patriot had been designed to look similar to the scud system, and incorporates the following design features: four separate cylinders containing nitrous oxide, overproof rum, chlorine gas and tobasco sauce are to be used with manually operated valves, and a hoseless helmet mounted computer displays current PN2O, PCH3CH2OH, and PCl2. The tobasco sauce (a brilliant idea contributed by experienced UK homemade rebreather jocks) is to mask the taste of the inevitable caustic cocktail when water gets into the loop (the counter-lung is specifically engineered to rupture upon ascent). The Patriot system is deviously priced $1000 less than the scud to attract buyers, and will be sold in dive shops everywhere, as well as some German hardware stores. -Sean
