Well, since you're a firefighter, here is a few questions I always wanted to ask about SCBA but were afaid to ask (and I'm sure that it'll entertain if not inform other subscribers)... - The (well, some) tanks are composite, right? Are there any special precautions for handling those? What is the service pressure? Do you have to "VIP" the tank if you breathe it dry? - The valve seems to integrate some kind of pressure gauge. Is it placed before or after the "faucet"? - Is there any fundamental differences between the regulator used (I suppose it's a 2 stage reg) and a run-of-the-mill SCUBA reg? - Is the air input in the mask itself directed against the "glass" to avoid fogging (like some Russian or Israeli gas mask someone on this list talked about a while back)? (subsidiary question to anyone who knows about AGA FFMs: I tried one a while back, and was surprised that it did not fog. Does the AGA direct the airflow on the "glass", too???) - Aside from plain vanilla talking and shouting, are there instances where radio is used in those (fire-fighting) masks? - Do you have to follow any specific "rule-of-thirds"-like rules regarding air consumtion monitoring when on SCBA? - Would you advise against using a "normal"* SCUBA tank and reg plus mask in a fire environment? I ask this because I remember, as a kid, reading in a French SCUBA diving textbook that "SCUBA tanks®s should be mandatory in houses in case of a fire, gas leak or whatever chemical spill"... * Of course, "normality" varies according to your level of strokery...
