Subject: New (?) German Trimix Rebreather
To: techdiver@terra.net
Also at the Birmingham Dive Show this October I also spotted yet another
rebreather that was totally new to me. The unit was German made & called (I
think) a 'Scud Rebreather' It is a semi-closed trimix rebreather designed for
deep diving.

The unit comprised a scrubber unit and four seperate cylinders all strapped
together. One cylinder (3 litres) was only used for air bailout. The other
three cylinders contained pure O2 (4 litres), N2 (4 litres) and He (2 litres).
A
breathable trimix was mixed by the unit during the dive.

The counterlung was located on the back, within the scrubber shell.

This rebreather was described as being the complete antithesis of the
fully electronic, computer controlled Cis-Lunar rebreather, containing no
electronics of any kind (not even a ppO2 sensor). The flow rates of the three
gasses were carefully set before each & every dive using a calibrated pressure
gauge & flow meter. I think that both diluent gasses were set to flow at
constant volume and the oxygen was set to flow at constant mass. A computer
program was shown that would determine the required flow rates for a particular
dive.

As there is absolutely no way of telling during the dive what gas mix you are
breathing then I would imagine that the setting up of flow rates for this
rebreather before each dive would be extemely critical. However, once set up
as
long as your metabolic rate & consumption of O2 remains within acceptable
limits
then there must be very little to go wrong.

There are apparently 4 of these units already sold in the UK & I don't know how
many other units elsewhere in Europe. The price quoted was 4000 pounds. It
was
claimed that one of these units had been used for diving the Lusitania
recently.

This was news to me.

Anyone know any more ??

     Regards, Steve M.
