Subject: More on antimalarials vs decompression
This is from the hyperbaric list. Interesting I think in the light of
prior posts

Subject: antimalarials vs decompression

The only input I can provide on the subject would be anecdotal.

In April of this year 19 of us went to Belize for some diving and jungle
exploration. All of us took Chloroquine. None of us noticed any of the symptoms
mentioned in the warnings.

A study of the other anti-malarials prior to the trip revealed even worse
symptoms. One drug in particular seemed a horrible mix with diving, it was
Mefloquine if I remember correctly. A discussion with Peter Hughes Diving
indicated that they had had several problems with divers on that drug
experiencing hallucinations and convulsions (sometimes underwater). The
physicians desk reference basically said only use this drug if Chloroquine was
not an option. Some medical conditions preclude the use of Chloroquine, and some
areas of the world have Chloroquine resistant strains of Malaria. The CDC keeps
track of this information and has a fax-back service for advice on travel
medicine.
