I can usually tell the difference. There are two sub wrecks near each other
off Block Island, the U853 in 130 fsw, and the Bass in 160 fsw, that I dive
frequently, sometimes both in the same day. I usually don't notice any
narcosis on the U853 unless it's very dark or the water is exceptionally
cold. On the Bass it is definitely there, especially when penetrating (the
Bass is a very dark, tight and silty inside). It's easy not to feel narced
on a tropical bounce dive with no task loading. Now try not raising silt or
getting caught on the machinery while wearing a drysuit, doubles, and full
wreck paraphenalia deep inside a sub in the cold dark North Atlantic, and you
may suddenly find your head less clear than you thought!
