The protection from malaria provided enough selection pressure to maintain the presence of the sickle cell allele. In the fens (UK) as well, oddly enough. Don't confuse intent with selection. Sickle cell may have arisen everywhere. What is certain is that in the areas strongly affected by malaria, it didn't get selected out. The mechanism (I think Marc is correct) is irrelevant. More relevant is the mode of action of the prophylactic in question, for which we need the advice not of a geneticist, nor a doctor, but a phamacologist. Jason PS how did this start again?
