sometime in the last month, somebody posted a question about some cylinders that had been carried a long way into a cave system and left unused for several years. The post was wondering if the stored air was still good, and how to check. Haven't seen any other replies, and I'd be pretty nervous about breathing the air. I've been thinking about it, though. Gas certifying agencies may have some idea of storage of pure medical or scientific gasses, but without knowing exactly how much moisture and oil the compressor was pumping, these bottles would probably be unknown. No harm in making some calls, though. You could also bring one cylinder out and get it visually checked internally for rust and gunk. Since that's done yearly, those tanks theoretically shouldn't even be used with fresh fills. You could even try to get a sample from each tank, and maybe one from a fresh tank for a baseline, and find a local college with a decent chem department and a gas chromatograph. I'd still carry my own air in, though. ======================================================= Roger Carlson w 310-812-0430 somewhere off Hermosa Beach, CA f 310-812-1363 roger@ch*.sp*.tr*.co* h 310-frogger =======================================================
