In Reply to the post talking about 12v to 110v convertors this is 
rather more work than is necessary.

The easiest way to get 120v in Britain is to use a standard 
center tapped transfomer.

Using only the primary side of the transformer you can convert 240-
120 volts or indeed you can even go the other way 120-240.

   Primary side of any standard 240v transformer

  M  (  Centre tap        |
  A  (------------       240v a.c.
  R  (           |        | 
  Y  (          120v a.c. |

As Mentioned above this will work in both directions. It should be 
pretty easy to build a box with the appropriate sockets on. Total 
cost a few pounds.
