The following is is responce to Carls message

1 I would propose that some type of communications link
be established.

This link is commercially availiable srom sigma systems engineering
as a bought package.

It is called A DIVER INFORMATION PROCESSING SYSTEM DIPS
and incompases the following features

A processor unit which is belt mounted.

A head up display, that means that the display is attached to your
mask and looks like a small television, this can be removed by
flipping it out of the way.
Having used it brefly it would not ipair you vision to any great
extent
The image is virtual and can be text, windows or processed image

The battery back is waist mounted

A sensor pack is optional and can can incorporate a sonar system
allowing the diver to probe the invisable depth in front of him,
the head up display shows the image

It could be riged to show the out put of other sensors, such as
a compass and depth gauge, air guage and possible a heart rate
monitor such as the chest mounted ECG cardiograms made by POlar
and popular with the Athletic Clubs. These are accurate to within
1 beat per min and are a watch size unit.

The DIPS can be linked to a surface interface via an umbilicle,
( your safty rope ) or by acoustic telemetry, with allows te diver
to remail untethered.

It has a depth rating of approx 400m

The address of the makers of this unit are

(i.e. the diver has to release the lock to descend),
perhaps somewhat similar to equipment used by climbers?

This is a good idea, the devices are also used in caving, Made by
PETZL, and called Shunts, ascendders, and STOPS, however the names
do vary.

They require a positive grip on the device for te line to be fed
through, if your grip is relaxed these devices lock on the rope,

IMO A full body harness could be worn under the Bc, this does not imped
movement, if it did climbers would not use it

If you wish I will retreive more info and go into deeper depth about the
DIPS units capabilities
