I heard the following from a friend -- a non-clean regulator was put
on an O2 cylinder, and when turned on a sharp, though not particularly loud,
crack was heard. On inspection, the first stage of the regulator was found
to have a hairline crack. I can't personally verify this however.

I've been reading for a couple of weeks now, so I guess it's time to say
what I do. My open water diving is mostly fairly conventional (a consequence
of being in a University club). The "real" diving is cave diving --- I was
a caver long before I was a diver, and learned to dive for that specific
reason (the open water was a bonus). UK cave diving is not generally deep,
or particularly long (with a few exceptions) --- our problems are poor
visibility, constricted passages, and carrying through the dry cave.
Making any exploratory progress nowadays generally requires some, er,
"civil engineering"...

Finally,... I have a question. I'm currently involved in diving at the end
of a cave which involves a 4km carry in, mostly arkward passage. The long
carry, together with the fact that diving conditions are unpredictable, means
that full cylinders have tended to accumulate at the end of the cave.
I've taken in fresh cylinders, but a couple of the other divers are looking
longingly at these other cylinders, just lying there. The trouble is, they've
been there for up to six years... We are in a position to check the O2 content,
and pressure, and can compute from these a reasonable estimate of the amount
of corrosion that has occured. Also, I guess we could running some of the
air through some white cloth to see if any rust emerges. Is there anything
else that may have happened? Any other simple checks that can be done?

Thanks in advance.
