Rich- Long hose enables you to re-route so it does not stick out in the breeze snagging on stuff yet still allows full unincumbered head movement. BTW, on solo diving- You might want to read in the Sept. Dive Training, excellent article by Alex Brylske "The Buddy System Reexamined". There might be hope for us solo divers yet.
