i too was wondering the proper way to rig a pony bottle and then it hit
me.i took out my heliarc welding set and welded a 30ft3 pony directly onto
my beauchat 180ft3 tank.this way my pony is roughly 1/6th my gas supply
which should be fine to get me to the surface.after all,my 25 minute dives
to 130 usually only give me about 30-40 minutes of decompression.the bad
part however is that when i was done welding the tanks together i had to
re-oxygen clean them (if your tanks arennt oxygin cleaned then youre
breaking federal laws,i heard this from a reliable source so it must be
true).the other bad thing is now when i tried to get my tanks filled the guy
at the fill vat just looks at them,looks at me,and shakes his head.however i
can directly fill the helium from my heliarc welding set directly into my
tanks,but ive been told i should only use medical grade helium as opposed to
welding grade helium.someone once told me that he used balooon grade
helium,but he did more deep dives then i do so could justify the added
expense of the ballooon grade.of course i only need trimix to go below 250
because the many years of experience i have collecting artifacts on air down
to 249 feet proves that i am indeed good deep on air,but 250 is just where
my "personal preference" limit is to switch to helium mixes.i usually find
the best artifacts at 240 too,but they usually deteriorate by the time i hit
decompression and are worthless by the time i get to the surface.now the
main reason i need to get that pony is because i cant reach behind my head
(my arms are so big they wont bend that far) to turn my valves off if i have
a reg failure,so i need the pony to be safe.can someone recommend what i
should do to fix these problems? - sum stroke
