Jim, I just came back from a Lake Superior (41 degree H20 temp) diving trip using the configuration you describe (OMS 120 and 30cf pony) and I couldn't imagine using this configuration on a 200' dive with any type of bottom time. We were doing profiles on the order of 20-25 mins of bottom time with 20-30 mins of deco (air), on wrecks in the 130-150' range. This configuration worked okay for this type of diving. But, based on my experience it seems that it is about at the limit. To fit within gas limitations (120cf) using thirds, bottom times for anything deeper (in my case) wouldn't be very long. You may be able to cut it close, but on a 200' dive I suspect that most people would be cutting it real close with no reserve. I've always assumed the 120 has to provide your total gas supply from start through deco. Forget the pony - I've never figured it in for gas management purposes - other than for emergency bailouts - ascent through all deco stops. Maybe I just burn to much air to do those deep of dives on a single and a pony - and feel comfortable..:). Not a flame, but maybe I missed something and should cancel the order to double my 120.... :) Thanks, Ron >>> <JimH720113@ao*.co*> 08/26/96 07:07pm >>> I have been diving the great lakes for >20 years. For the diving done here on a regular basis, it seems ponies are the rule,,,,not the exception...if you are diving greater than 250' deep a whole new config. is needed,,,but for the average wreck dive 200' for 20/25 min. in water <38 deg. a pony fill the bill.. I use only 30cu.ft pony filled to 3,300 so there is a bit more than 30. the isolator valve with two regs. is fine except most people can not get to the valves because of the dry suit and the underwear necessary for the somewhat cool waters. i have found that a 120 cf. main,,,,with a 30 cf pony is about right for nice easy diving to 200+ with a margin of safety......but then again this is MHO,,,,,,,, so flame away all -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@terra.net'.
