I have been diving the great lakes for >20 years. For the diving done here on a regular basis, it seems ponies are the rule,,,,not the exception...if you are diving greater than 250' deep a whole new config. is needed,,,but for the average wreck dive 200' for 20/25 min. in water <38 deg. a pony fill the bill.. I use only 30cu.ft pony filled to 3,300 so there is a bit more than 30. the isolator valve with two regs. is fine except most people can not get to the valves because of the dry suit and the underwear necessary for the somewhat cool waters. i have found that a 120 cf. main,,,,with a 30 cf pony is about right for nice easy diving to 200+ with a margin of safety......but then again this is MHO,,,,,,,, so flame away all
