About a month ago I posted a non-tech note about my stepson starting his OW certification class and the horrifying things I saw in class. Since many people asked me privately and on the list for follow-up, here goes. For the tech purists, excuse the bandwidth waste. The "lard-ass from hell" girl in the class that they were passing despite the fact she had no business in a bathtub without a buddy was failed on the basis of her total lack of skills in the pool (or on the outside chance my criticism leaked back to them). Maybe there is some justice in the world. His first two checkouts were a bit lax and I started to worry again, but he had his final two this afternoon with a different (and impressively good) instructor who cut him no slack, and even backed up and made him to the skills that were skipped and/or rushed over the previous week. I was very pleased to see him to mask removal/replacement and quite calmly take his time to get the strap straight, pull his hair out from underneath the skirt, and finally clear (instructor noted that as well). But I'll quit bragging on the kid :-) Bottom line is that it worked out OK, and my earlier fears of them signing off and certifying some blatantly unqualified students never happened; they did get the axe following the final pool session if they didn't have the water skills necessary to carry on. I guess they were just giving them until the last minute to miraculously turn the tables and pass. Jeff
