Subject: FFM's and Rebreathers
I concur with both John and Rod.

As most of you know, I did experiment with FFM's and my rebreather. A
couple of dives using Robinettes Widolf went o.k., a couple did not. I
have not had much luck with the AGA so far. I've gone back to the half
mask and hoses, and have enjoyed my dives tremendously since then. I've
gone back to the basics, since I am a rebreather weenie, and really need
more experience on the rig as it was designed before I try to get fancy.

My reccomendation to all of you who are expecting delivery of the new
CCR-500 is to take the advice that it took so long for me to take from Rod:
Dive your rig a hundred or so times with the hoses. Once you are fully
comfortable and know the unit like you know your wife, then start
experimenting with FFM's if you want.

I can tell you the following from my experience: Beards don't work. No
matter what I tried, water got past the seal, and into the loop. Maybe I
have a weird shaped face (the doctor said I'd be better after the plastic
surgery...), or just a manly growth.

Rod is right on the money when he sez that your lungs work harder with the
AGA. The U.S. Navy Diving Manual (Vol. II) indicates that only Heliox is
used for deep dives with the Mark 15 & 16. They also set a bottom limit of
200 fsw for both rigs. I don't know if that has something to do with
density of gas, or just the standard Navy safety crap, but the gas did feel
pretty thick (trimix) at 260' a few weeks ago.

When you get your rigs, just go out and dive 'em. Get acquainted with it,
learn all its tiny nuances, talk to guys like John and Rod about theirs,
and most of all, have fun. I spend an hour last week on the bottom on a
shipwreck, just screwing around - it was great. I could have spent a
couple more hours down there, without a care in the world. That's what
makes these machines so cool for diving. The compressed air dudes I was
diving with had to bail after 40 minutes.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in...
