Can't we at least come up with scenarios that are somewhat realistic, that
would help us plan our dives, rather than just get us arguing about what
the "best" reaction is in a no-win situation that's so easily prevented?

What is this morbid fascination people have with certain death scenarios?
Reminds me of the neighbor's kids who keep asking about what happens if
a 300' long shark appears out of nowhere and EATS my dive buddy? Well,
yeah, there aren't REALLY 300' long sharks, but what if there WERE? What
would you do, huh? You'd DIE, wouldn't you? Yeah, you'd DIE. See how
DANGEROUS this stuff is?

This just wouldn't happen. If all I had was a computer, I probably
would not dive, especially not "deep" (how deep is deep?), off of
a boat. Yes, I might do a 30' shore dive, but we're talking techdiving
here, are we not?

Part of this sort of diving, IMHO, is proper planning and being
prepared. If you would actually, intentionally, do a [required]
decompression dive with a single computer & no backup devices, you
are just plain stupid (see my .sig for details :-).

>Part way through your dive you look at the computer and it is blank.

>What do you do, and why?

So not only are we diving with only one depth gauge/timer (the computer),
but we aren't even keeping track of it? We have NO IDEA how deep we've
been, or for how long? We knowingly got into decompression without even
meeting the most basic planning & equipment requirements?

In this case, I think the answer to "What do you do?" is: You probably get
hurt. Why? Because you are totally unprepared for this dive. Period.
