Greg-
From what I inferred from the report, the Navy was using them to
investigate small sonar "hits". Navy would zero in on something, drop a
shot line on it. Then these guys would go down and catalog what they
found. Some targets were as small as a cup. It appeared that these guys
had no basic OW safety gear, such as a reel & lift bag or redundant
equipment. And with 4 or 6 divers on a boat, and using their profiles,
they would only be able to check out 2 or 3 sites a day. I did not see
MOD labels anywhere, so I assume they were using air. I am surprised that
the NTSB is not using any volunteer experienced wreckers to do these
dives. Using a rotating set of 6 wreckers breathing nitrox, you could
quadruple the number of sites.

On a selfish note, I sure would like to know what they found down there
other than flight 800. This must be the most detailed study of a chunk of
divable ocean floor ever done. Wonder if any new wrecks were discovered?
How bout it, Ramio, you getting the inside scoop, or what?
