Guys, we have not yet been able to schedule a Wakulla dive in August. We are
past our allocations of dives during the summer months. I am going to ask for
one more in August, and then starting in September we can dive more often, and
in the winter all of the time.
We do not do big holidays as the Park is too crowded, and the driving is too
dangerous. I do not like to leave Ft Lauderdale on those weekends. You guys do
what you want.
As for the rest of Leon Sinks, we need to get going as soon as the conditions
are right. We also have some more new stuff to do - I am working on that.
Otherwise, I want to run one more long one in "O" Tunnel while Jarrod is
around, and then we can start new tunnels in September. The current crew has
that dive down cold, and we need the other guys to set it up and to meet us,
which draws away our next six divers who can get long and stay long , while
still maintaining nine more to set up and clean up that. We are stretched for
people, unless we do it just right, and everyone shows up. Miner will be back
in
action , and Casey is available that weekend, Julius is back,so we should be ok
as long as Irving is there and all of the usuals. I do not want to make the Rat
dive twice back to back, or Sankey. If we run Sankey, Casey and Rat long the
first day, and Irving , Miner and Berman the second, we should be able to get
two more teams to set up, but we really need two four-man teams, as the
safeties
are not in. We will also need a cleanup of the cleanup, which we can run
Sunday.
The Friday long guys can do that, and then they can get the K Tunnel lead and
bring out the safeties, while the other team can also go to 3500 to get the
empties and the empties at 2200 if there are any. This shuold give everyone a
long and a short dive (relatively).
Like I said, this has not been scheduled, and if it is, it is a seven stage
tripple scooter, and we the only difference in set up will be the extra bottle
at 3500, and the long team will drop the main scooter. The bottom time should
actually be the same (155 minutes at 285), and the deco is the same ( about
nine
or ten hours), but we will put in one more air bottle, and a trimix deco bottle
for breaks. The long exp team will be on a tripple the whole way and then a
four
from 5000, dropping everything and going to the original scooter at 3500 and
running with the greet team. This one will be a precise single reel dive (only
a
Kahuna). You know what a Kahuna on 9900 feet means. (Tripple this)
In september we will systematicly check every long tunnel and eventually
drive the A Tunnel with a hard shot, but we need better vis. We must get that
one right, as it is the source of the bad water so far, and is likely the Leon
Sinks connection. We need it a little closer to be able to hook, so if we add
about five thousand to that (it is not as deep, and is only 7,500 out)) the way
it is heading, we will be able to get it from the other side. We need a few
dives in Turner before the surface water gets cold, and we need to work Big D
and then Leon as the system starts to go down. We will finish the clear Wakulla
Tunnels this winter, and maybe we can start Sheppard and St Marks if Wakulla
and
Leon get really nasty. We still have to finish the middle section downstream of
Sullivan, and the clear stuff in Big D, etc.
Pete Gomez has been doing a bang up job of getting the scientific guys
coordinated, and we now have committments on molecular biology, micro biology,
water chemistry, and biology in addition to radioistopes and a possibility of
traces and other studies. This is in addition to what the Water Management
districts are doing and what we are already doing with FSU and UF, and DEP. Now
we just need the flow meters installed, and the new pumps installed.
Curt Bowen is working on getting us another habitat. We have all kinds of
stuff going on. I am building scooters for "lotion boy" and "lamar junior".
Sallot's is done if he can drag his lazy ass down here to get it (if his wife
will let him take time out from watching figure skating or group therapy, or
whatever he went to the olymics to see)((hey Ken, I bet they did not let you
play - we do)). -G
