Empress of Ireland Expedition 1996 This post is made as a courtesy to Brian Skerry. Dates: September 15 - 21 1996 (inclusive) Where: Rimouski, Canada Cost: $740 US Funds for the diving vessel -- this includes Oxygen, Argon and Compressors Accommodations are available locally at approximately $55 per person per day. At present we have 6 spaces available on this trip. The Wreck: The Empress of Ireland was the greatest marine catastrophe in Canadian history and second only to the Titanic, during peacetime. A total of 1477 persons were on board when she sank May 29 1914. The Empress is 550 feet long with a 65 foot beam resting on here starboard side in 155 feet of very cold brackish water. The wreck can be reached in as shallow as 90 feet of water. The Empress is a grave site and human bones do scatter the wreck and are seen on a regular basis -- disturbance of these remains is prohibited. ARTIFACTS - The Empress still holds significant amounts of artifacts and may be recovered. They must be immediately delivered to the Receiver of the Wreck in Quebec where they will remain for one year until available for disposal. Presently all disposal have been made back to the respective salvor. We do not foresee any changes to this system this year. The Dive Vessel -- The Samuel De Champlain -- this CCGA 55 foot steal hulled vessel normally carries 80 passengers for whale tours. The boat is fitted with an appropriate ladder, chase boat, oxygen decompression rig, emergency oxygen, Argon, and two compressors. The boat will be accommodating only our group, a captain and crew. The boat will leave the dock and return to the dock each day. The is a non-refundable trip (bad weather days count. Be prepared for cold 30 degree water, strong currents, poor visibility and significant penetration risks. Although it is not very deep extensive experience in these types of conditions is necessary. If you have a serious interest in this trip please E-mail me all of your pertinent information including a FAX number so I can forward you a complete outline. Thanks Joel Silverstein
